How to Teach Subject Pronouns: An Introductory Lesson Plan

When learning English, students must be introduced to pronouns early on. It’s important to teach pronouns as a part of basic sentence construction. When to teach this lesson on subject pronouns

This is a great lesson to teach beginner students. Still your student(s) should have prior knowledge of how to use the verb be and basic sentences in the present simple tense. In addition, this lesson should be used with students that can identify basic parts of speech including verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. That way they will be able to utilize subject pronouns correctly and confidently. 

What does this lesson plan include? 

This lesson is full of several activities that are entertaining and informative for beginner students. It includes lots of visuals and pictures so students have a better understanding of how subject pronouns are used to describe people or things. It also includes several matching, reading, speaking and picture description activities. Finally, it contains gap-fill exercises so that students can practice using subject pronouns in sentences. Though it appears that it is longer, this lesson is not overly dense. By the end of this lesson students will be able to use the subject pronouns I, you, she, he, it, we, you and they correctly. 

How to teach this lesson on subject pronouns 

At the beginning of this lesson, it is necessary to gauge your student’s current knowledge and complete any extra review. You can start by asking your student(s) to give you examples of nouns and verbs. From here you can start to introduce your students to the pronoun. Be sure to explain and demonstrate how to use I  in sentences. Also, make sure students can read the provided sentences with this newly introduced pronoun. Then you will do the same process for each of the remaining subject pronouns (you, he, she, it, we, they). After reviewing the subject pronouns and examples of sentences including them, students will work on completing a variety of exercises. If they have difficulty with any of the exercises, provide your students with demonstrations and examples. In any case, be sure to encourage students and give positive but constructive feedback.
