5 New Advanced ESL Reading Activities

We’ve released five new Advanced ESL Reading Activities for your students!

For our first Advanced ESL Reading Activities we’ve chosen topics that we know will motivate your students! Each lesson contains some pre-reading discussion questions, followed by articles written in different styles. The articles contain a small glossary that assists while reading the text, and post-reading activities include comprehension questions, discussion prompts and quotes on the subject by various people.

Each Reading Activity has a Homework Activity that uses the same reading text, which the student will use to improve reading skills, such as reading for gist or specific information. Included also is the opportunity to present the student’s own point of view based on the article or on an opinion expressed about the article.
We’ve purposefully chosen some engaging topics that will motivate your students to relate the texts to their own opinions!
R501 – A Difficult Decision
Angie looks back at the day that she left her groom-to-be at the wedding altar. While she appears to regret how she handled that day, the student is invited to determine to what extent Angie’s personality affected how the situation evolved.
R502 – Giving Relationship Advice
Billy has been having some relationship issues with Martha, and so turns to Dan for some advice. However, Dan’s words are perhaps not chosen with the greatest care and Billy is left wondering whether he should have asked for the advice in the first place. Since giving and receiving advice is a topic that requires a certain amount of diplomacy, we’re sure your students will enjoy this very personal account.
R503 – Embarrassing Friends
We all have a friend or family member who exhibits behavior that makes us cringe, feel embarrassed, or who might just explode from time to time in a public space. The activity recounts an evening out among friends, which unfortunately takes a turn for the worse… We’ve all been in this situation so we’re sure that this will make your students smile… or wince.

R504 – The Rise of the Superbug
Society’s use of prescription drugs has soared in recent decades. In particular, our increased usage of antibiotics has allowed previously treatable bacteria to mutate into superbugs, resistant to all known antibiotics and predicted to become ever more lethal. Who is responsible? Doctors? The pharmaceutical companies? Or us, who devour antibiotics in greater quantities each year?

R505 – White Privilege
The eyebrow-raising topic looks at the idea of how skin color provides advantages to many in their daily life – provided of course that the skin color in question is white. Do some people gain advantages simply because they were born white? Does every white person benefit from White Privilege? This article provides an introductory overview to a subject that many people still feel uncomfortable talking about – yet awkward subjects often make for passionate discussions!

We’re sure that your students will enjoy these Reading Activities and their associated Homework Activities, and of course you’re always welcome to get in touch if you have an idea for our next advanced ESL reading activities release!
